Philips Hue brings its smart light bulbs outdoors
Hue is launching a line of outdoor lamps just in time for the thaw

Just in time for above-freezing temperatures, Philips Hue, everyone’s favorite mood-maker, is releasing a line of smart light bulbs for outdoors. The weatherproof range includes Calla, a soft, round path light that sits atop a bollard; Lily, a spotlight designed to nestle into the garden; and a set of three wall-mounted luminaires.
Like Hue’s indoor system, the outdoor lights connect to the Philips Hue bridge, which allows homeowners to control the bulbs through a smartphone app or with their choice of chatty assistant (it’s compatible with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home).
You can program the lights to turn on at a certain hour or use the app’s location awareness feature so you’re greeted with the glow of your choice—Hue bulbs offer up more than 16 million color choices—when you arrive home.
The lights start at $50 for luminaires and go up to $280 for the Lily and its three accessories. The line isn’t available until July, but it’s never too early to start planning your first technicolor cookout.
