Smaller single-family homes continue to catch the eye of home buyers across the country
Whether this peaked interest is caused by the ever-growing trend in tiny homes or its due in part to the current housing market, Americans are finding smaller spaces more attractive.
While new single-family home sizes continue to decline, the average home size for Americans is still around 2,500 square feet, which is comparable to homes in Australia (2,236-2,554 sq ft).
There are a number of countries where living in spaces below 1,000 square feet is the norm:
Belgium – 935 sq ft
Finland – 837 sq ft
Germany – 946 sq ft
Sweden – 978 sq ft
United Kingdom – 924 sq ft

Our tiniest featured home, coming in at 394 sq ft, picked up a lot of press the week it was listed online. Yes, this stand-alone carriage house may be tucked away from the main road, however, it’s location is anything but isolated. The new homeowner will be within blocks of Tennyson, a vibrant and unique shopping district in NW Denver. This quaint home features a modern kitchen with new stainless steel appliances, granite counters, luxury vinyl flooring and even a garage, which is perhaps larger than the home itself.
This listing was shared over 300 times on social media and was featured on Denver’s 9News. Although the price was considered high for many, the listing had over 20 showings on day one and received multiple offers over asking price.
How do you keep a tiny home clutter free?
You may be ready to downsize your space, but do you know how to decorate smaller homes without creating unwanted clutter? There are a number of tricks and techniques surfacing to help assist in the tiny home movement. Some decorating recommendations include utilizing your vertical space, using sliding doors or barn doors, purchasing nesting dishes and tables, and placing mirrors on walls to pull in light and create the illusion of more space.
