That sounds counterintuitive, right? But it\u2019s true! How many times have you purchased something directly in an email? Not often, most likely.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the goal of your email is to get someone to open it and hopefully click on what\u2019s inside. That\u2019s it! Emails get people interested enough to click on a link, and then the page where they end up does the selling.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that there are\u00a0<u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radicati.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Email-Statistics-Report-2017-2021-Executive-Summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">over 269 billion emails sent each day<\/a><\/u>. That\u2019s a lot of competition for attention.<\/p>\n<p>Email service providers, like Gmail, have tried to help their users by filtering out the \u2018junk\u2019 before it even hits their inbox (even though it\u2019s not technically labeled spam).<\/p>\n<p>That means you face an uphill battle to ever\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/blog\/11-types-of-cold-emails-that-generate-a-response\/\">get your emails opened (let alone clicked<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to show you a ton of examples today that have been able to overcome those challenges.<\/p>\n<p>And at the end of this article, you\u2019ll be able to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/blog\/how-to-use-email-segmentation-to-increase-your-conversion-rate\/\">tweak email campaigns<\/a>\u00a0to instantly increase results.<\/p>\n<p>Does that sound good? WP Engine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Do you want to see one of my favorite sales emails of all time?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s\u00a0<u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/rand\/exceptional-upgrade-path-ux-from-wpengine\/\" target=\"_blank\">what it looks like<\/a><\/u>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10281 size-full\" title=\"how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_1.gif\" alt=\"how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_1\" width=\"690\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What?!<\/p>\n<p>How is a simple, text-based email like this with dry language a \u201cgood sales email\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t you believe me?<\/p>\n<p>Check out what the CEO of the company\u00a0<u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/training.kalzumeus.com\/newsletters\/archive\/lifecycle_emails_1\" target=\"_blank\">had to say about it<\/a><\/u>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt permanently moved the needle on sign-ups after just a week of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>See, I\u2019m not lying!<\/p>\n<p>But there is a trick at play here.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that this individual email is amazing. For example, there are obviously no\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/blog\/picture-perfect-4-steps-to-building-powerful-links-with-images\/\">images or exciting graphic details<\/a>. And the copywriting is pretty simple, too.<\/p>\n<p>There are no clever hacks or tricks inside.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, what makes this email perform so well is what happened before people ever received it.<\/p>\n<p>The people who received this email originally signed up for\u00a0<u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/speed-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\">WP Engine\u2019s Speed Tool<\/a><\/u>. Basically, you plug your URL in, and they\u2019ll tell you not only how fast your site is, but also what needs to change or improve to speed it up.<\/p>\n<p>The catch is that users have to provide their names and email addresses to get the customized report.<\/p>\n<p>Then, over the period of a few weeks,\u00a0<u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/training.kalzumeus.com\/lifecycle-emails\" target=\"_blank\">training emails were sent out<\/a><\/u>\u00a0to help those users implement all of the \u2018action steps\u2019 needed to speed up their sites.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2.jpg\" alt=\"how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2\" width=\"690\" height=\"508\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.virtuance.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2.jpg 690w, https:\/\/staging.virtuance.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.virtuance.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2-549x404.jpg 549w, https:\/\/staging.virtuance.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2-326x240.jpg 326w, https:\/\/staging.virtuance.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2-110x81.jpg 110w, https:\/\/staging.virtuance.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2-136x100.jpg 136w, https:\/\/staging.virtuance.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/how_to_write_high_converting_email_newsletters_2-217x160.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In each email, the writer first pointed out the mistakes, then told the reader exactly how to fix each one.<\/p>\n<p>That built a massive amount of credibility over time.<\/p>\n<p>So when someone does finally receive that original email above, they\u2019re much more inclined to move forward with the purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Cialdini calls this \u201c<u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pre-Suasion-Revolutionary-Way-Influence-Persuade-ebook\/dp\/B01C36E2YS\" target=\"_blank\">pre-suasion<\/a><\/u>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s based on a psychological principle called \u201c<u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/explorable.com\/priming\" target=\"_blank\">priming<\/a><\/u>\u201d that says that people are more likely to buy a product after they\u2019ve been essentially pre-sold a concept or idea.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty simple, right?<\/p>\n<p>And yet it\u2019s also incredibly powerful when done correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another example of a company that uses a similar trigger to get you to take action.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Time Etc.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/What-is-a-typical-conversion-ratio-for-a-B2B-SaaS-business-from-free-to-paying-users\" target=\"_blank\">Most free trials<\/a><\/u>\u00a0never go anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>People might sign up for one, try it out for a few minutes, and then leave forever.<\/p>\n<p>The trick is to get those people back \u2014\u00a0somehow, some way.<\/p>\n<p>Just telling people to \u201ccome back\u201d wouldn\u2019t be very compelling, though.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, you should focus on the specific value that prospects are bound to get from the service.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what\u00a0<u><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/timeetc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Time Etc<\/a><\/u>. does below.
