Real estate agent Hannah Tai uses her pastry chef skills to create unforgettable closing gifts for every client<\/h2>\n

You\u2019re just as likely to find\u00a0real estate agent<\/a>\u00a0Hannah Tai mixing batter, hand-painting fondant and carefully placing sprinkles as you are to find her diligently working to seal the deal for the clients she serves every day.<\/p>\n

Before Tai began her career at Vanguard Properties in Mill Valley, Calif., she was a well-known pastry chef who worked in some of California\u2019s best kitchens (namely,\u00a0Jeremiah Tower\u2019s Santa Fe Bar and Grill in Berkeley) for 20-plus years before going on to establish her own business, Hannah\u2019s Edible Art, in 2000.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been a creative person and an artistic person,\u201d Tai said, while mentioning how a year-long excursion to China during her college years stoked her creativity and led her to become a pastry chef.<\/p>\n

\u201cI studied (Chinese) for about a year, then the artistic side of me wanted to evolve,\u201d she said in a previous interview with the\u00a0Marin Independent Journal. \u201cI was vegetarian \u2014 I\u2019m now vegan \u2014 so I didn\u2019t want to be a regular chef and have to cook meat. I went into pastry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tai honed her skills, making special occasion and wedding cakes for clients all over the Bay Area. But, her encounter with a real estate agent sparked a new passion in Tai\u2019s mind: She wanted not only to craft cakes but real estate deals<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

During her own home buying experience in 1995, Tai\u2019s real estate agent noticed how involved she was in the process, reading all the paperwork and carefully examining all the marketing materials for each prospective home. Although it took 12 years for Tai to make the leap into real estate, she never forgot her agent\u2019s encouraging words.<\/p>\n

\u201cHome has always been a sanctuary for me,\u201d she said while recalling how she spent much of her childhood globetrotting with her parents who were travel writers. \u201cI think he noticed that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Tai eventually closed Hannah\u2019s Edible Art in 2013, she never let go of her passion for pastries. In fact, she used the lessons she learned as a chef to propel her career as an agent.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very similar in a sense when you\u2019re dealing with brides, and when you\u2019re dealing with people buying a house,\u201d she said. \u201cIt can be a stressful time, and I found out that I really enjoyed the process of working with both kinds of clients.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that both are a process,\u201d Tai added. \u201cWhen I\u2019m baking a cake, it\u2019s a creative process, and there\u2019s a lot of detail and care that goes into it. You\u2019re dealing with your clients and you\u2019re trying to help them have the perfect cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re doing a real estate transaction, you\u2019re working for them and your primary goal is to help them through this process and getting them to their dream home. Finishing up a cake or finishing up an escrow \u2014 it\u2019s the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

And when all is said and done, Tai breaks out her cooking utensils to whip up a sweet treat for her clients to celebrate the closing of a deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI enjoyed the creative process and I translated that into making cakes for my clients after they closed escrow,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cIt just seemed like a natural thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
