You hope nobody notices the crumbs and missing LEGO bricks, but still blow your own cover by apologizing for the mess. It\u2019s the housekeeping equivalent of getting caught with your pants down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Post__item Post__html\">\n<div class=\"Html\">\n<p>If someone were to poke through your storage areas and see all the things you\u2019re needlessly keeping, the feeling would probably be the same: Suddenly aware and feeling awkward about things you very easily could have handled, but haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Post__item Post__html\">\n<div class=\"Html\">\n<p>Here is a big list of things that none of us has any business keeping:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Post__item Post__html\">\n<div class=\"Html\">\n<ol>\n<li>The fondue set from your wedding registry that you haven\u2019t used once in your 12 years of marriage.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>A stack of retired sheets you tell yourself you\u2019re going to use as drop cloths for <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/7-home-staging-mistakes-slowing-your-online-listing-traffic\/\">when you paint<\/a><\/span>, but you still just buy the drop cloths every time.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Your old cell phones.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Beanie Babies you\u2019re hoarding in case they become valuable one day.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Pillows you\u2019ve retired from the beds that you keep in case you have some giant slumber party that never happens. (You don\u2019t even like to share a room on vacation!)<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Baby clothes you wore 35 years ago that your mother saved for you. (Thanks, Mom, but they\u2019ve got to go.)<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Expensive jeans you haven\u2019t fit into since 2011.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Costume jewelry you like so little that you\u2019d let your toddler play dress-up with it if it weren\u2019t a choking hazard.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cookbooks you haven\u2019t cracked since you were inspired to go vegan six years ago.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>That refillable popcorn bucket you swear you\u2019re actually going to remember to bring to Disney next time you go.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Takeout menus from restaurants whose dishes you know by heart by now. (And, you know, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/grow-real-estate-brand-social\/\">they\u2019re online<\/a><\/span>.)<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Coupons you will actually never remember to pull out before they expire.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Magazines you\u2019re keeping in the unlikely event you get struck by the urge to make rolled paper baskets.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Clothes from 15 years ago, because you know if you hang onto them long enough they\u2019ll come back in style again. But also, you remember the trend when it happened the first time, so the resurgence is just going to make you cringe.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>The boots that sit on the top shelf in your closet because you loved them so much when you got them in school\u2026 like 20 years ago.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Printed photo outtakes and duplicates.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Stuffed animals that your children used to love but haven\u2019t asked for in over six months.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Chipped mugs that are \u201cotherwise perfectly fine.\u201d<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Holiday decorations that make you groan <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/pros-cons-selling-house-during-each-season\/\">every single winter<\/a><\/span> when you see them in the bin.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Full tubes of old, old lotion.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Candles whose smell you don\u2019t like. Burning those would be the opposite of relaxing.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Extra vases. All the extra vases.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>The cabinet full of washed-out, empty jars you never, ever use.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Orphan socks that have been in the orphaned sock basket for two years.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Retired cameras with obsolete mega pixel counts.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Decorative olive oil bottles your friend brought from Italy a decade ago.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Dregs of perfume you no longer wear. It\u2019s not going to smell any prettier.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>French fried onions from Thanksgiving three years ago. The \u201cbest by\u201d date is long gone and you know you\u2019re going to buy another container this year anyway.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Yellowed white extra power cords. They\u2019re so old they\u2019re a fire hazard.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Curtain rods. If you add <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/evergreen-earth-sheltered-home\/\">more windows<\/a><\/span> to your house, you can probably spring for another set of curtain rods.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Extra lamp shades. Any<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-staging-for-home-sellers-and-how\/\">new lamps<\/a><\/span> will almost certainly not fit or match them anyway.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cassette mix tapes. Do you even have a player? Take a pic and toss. (Maybe keep\u00a0<em>one<\/em>\u00a0for posterity. )<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Those extra water bottles you\u2019re keeping around for that hypothetical spontaneous hike you take when you have 15 guests over (and none of them have their own water bottles).<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Duck sauce packages. You have a surplus problem.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>The extra napkins you snagged when you picked up your to-go order. The only place those belong is the glove box of the car.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Old chemical cleaners you wouldn\u2019t touch with a 10-foot pole but hang onto anyway.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cleaning toothbrushes in excess of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/the-one-room-thatll-make-buyers-bail-even-if-they-love-the-house\/\">one per sink<\/a><\/span>.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>The old t-shirt stash you kept for cleaning but never, ever reach for.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Themed party decorations. No, you will not use them for the next kid in four years.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Holey socks you kept for <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/9-genius-housecleaning-hacks\/\">cleaning the blinds<\/a><\/span>.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Your old soccer sliders. (Unless your kid fits them by now.)<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Swimsuits you wouldn\u2019t feel awesome wearing.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Archaic <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/8-kitchen-trends-you-will-spot-2018\/\">kitchen<\/a><\/span> tools you never use and only keep because they were passed down by your relatives.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Old, dented, or cracked helmets. They\u2019re not safe.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Baby items that have been recalled.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Baby items if your youngest kid is over five.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Books you don\u2019t even remember reading and aren\u2019t TBRs.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>VHS tapes.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Incandescent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/philips-hue-brings-ismart-light-bulbs-outdoors\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">light bulbs<\/span>.<\/a><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Accessories for vacuums you no longer own.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>That tangle of extra cords and chargers for <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtuance.com\/blog\/how-sell-smart-home-3-talking-points-inman\/\">devices you\u2019ve replaced<\/a>.<\/span><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Table linens you\u2019d never use again. It\u2019s okay to realize your taste has changed drastically since you bought that autumnal table runner as a newlywed.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>The bags of seashells you\u2019ve been saving for seven years for an unspecified craft.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Boxes you\u2019ve been hoarding just in case you need to mail things. You have three more Prime boxes headed your way next week alone. You\u2019ll be fine.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Post__item Post__html\">\n<div class=\"Html\">\n<p>Honestly the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p>You might not relate to everything on the list, but it probably inspired a few similar thoughts. The idea is to be open and honest with yourself about what you need to hang on to.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid casting things off to a landfill, if you\u2019re able.
